Homeschooling in California

California homeschoolers are homeschooling as usual. Ann Zeise of A to Z Home's Cool cautions homeschoolers not to panic. She has posted resources for those who want to follow what's going on with California homeschooling and read the original decision.

Homeschooling Methods

Homeschooling is not a one-size fits all type of education. Children's learning styles are as varied as the biggest box of crayons one can find. If a certain style doesn't mesh with your child, try a different method. You may even have to try different methods for different subjects. Read more about homeschooling methods from an article written by April Morris.

Unit Safari

Unit-Safari is a co-op site where unit studies are put together as a group. This isn't a site for lurkers, but for active participants. A topic is chosen every two weeks and members send information to the list on that particular topic. At the end of that unit collection, the information is organized into a printable unit for members' use. These unit studies include Bible References, Learning Objectives, Vocabulary, Reference Books, Living Books, Movies, Websites, Activities, Worksheets, Games, Writing Assignments, and Evaluation Ideas.

Educator Discount Highlight

Borders Classroom Discount If you are a homeschooler and can provide any applicable state certification, you are eligible for the 20% Classroom Discount Card. The 20% discount applies to materials used in the classroom or for classroom preparation. Homeschoolers in states without certification should contact a manger at the store for instructions on how to document your status as a homeschooler. They offer their discount program to teachers of pre-school through high school including school librarians and homeschoolers. The card entitles the bearer to 20% off list price on books, music or videos for classroom/homeschool use only. Public and private school teachers have their "card" and I also have one for the local homeschool group I belong to. You can always make a card if you do not have one and put your school name on it. I made myself business cards with my school name printed on them.

For lots more educator discounts available, see our Educators Discount Page

What we're using

Learn at Home, Grade 6 by American Education
The book includes lessons for every day for 36 weeks. Areas of study include: reading, language skills, spelling, math, science and social studies. Also listed are additional activities supporting each week's lessons. It gives explanations of concepts and teaching approaches. You can supplement with other books, worksheets and various activities to expand on what is in the book. There are books listed to read but you may not have them at home. If you don't, check your local library. If they do not carry it, ask for an inter-library loan. You can always substitute with other books.
